Portraits for Commissions

I have always maintained that as good musician should be able to play anything, a good artist should be able to paint anything. Portraiture is the most challenging and demanding subject to portray.  I compare it to heart or brain surgery in medicine.  On the other hand, portraiture offers the artist sound wages and the opportunity to meet interesting people and form great friendships.

I have always refused to work from photos and require the subject to sit as much as possible, telling them "it's a small price to pay for immortality!"  Children are another matter.  I almost developed an ulcer trying to get them to sit still and finally caved in and used photos.  Naturally, posthumous portraits are also done from photos.

In my opinion, too many artists' portraits are just hand made photographs.  I have always felt that it made no sense to do anything by hand that a machine can do - and a camera is a machine.  A portrait should primarily be a good piece of art work; the subject happens to be a person.
